about us

About TELC

Nau mai, haere mai and welcome to the Tokomairiro Early Learning Centre.

We provide high quality education and care for all children aged from birth through to five years.

We are a community run, non-profit centre and have a supportive, hard-working governing committee, which all parents, caregivers, whanau and community members are welcome to join.

Both our centres are a full day service, each with two separate areas - one for the under two children, and an area for the over two children.

At both centres we have an experienced, stable teaching team of fully registered teachers, with most other staff either in training or with other qualifications.

We offer a low ratio of adults to children which enables us to provide higher quality education and care for your children.

Our Teaching Philosophy

Early childhood education is building the foundations for life-long learning and it is where children begin to develop the skills for life. Tokomairiro Early Learning Centre offers an environment where we are all a community of learners.

We believe children learn best when they are in a warm, caring and nurturing environment where they feel comfortable and confident to express themselves.

We are committed to integrating a bicultural programme, respecting Te Tiriti of Waitangi.

We follow an integrated curriculum which means that different curriculum areas such as maths, literacy, science etc. are included into the children's play experiences. The children are actively involved in their own learning and this is often driven by their dispositions, skills and interests. These are such things as curiosity, perseverance, leadership and working theories to name just a few.

Children are motivated to learn when it is relevant, meaningful and of interest to them. Through this they learn new skills and develop working theories about the world around them.

Our challenge as teachers is to extend the children's learning by provoking this interest, skill or disposition through quality interactions and experiences.

We document this learning in the children's profiles where narratives are stored that reflect your child's learning. We also acknowledge and value the learning and development that happens at home and encourage parents and caregivers to contribute or write stories for your children's profiles. We also support 'Storypark', which is an online version of the profile - this allows parents to contribute in another format.

Our Governing Committee

We are a community based, non profit incorporated society education and care provider. We are proud to be able to keep our fees low and all profits benefit the centre.

If you would like to be a member of this centre's governing committee, and help in making decisions for the centre and gain knowledge on how it operates, we welcome ALL new members. Meetings are held at the centre each month.

Transition to School

This procedure is established for the teachers, family/whānau and children of Tokomairiro Early Learning Centre, to guarantee that programmes will be actioned for each child and their family/whānau. We will ensure that each child will be as prepared for school as is possible with the resources and capabilities of all parties involved.
