This includes aspects such as sharing, turn taking, understanding another person's point of view, conflict negotiation, and strategies for initiating, maintaining an d enjoying a relationship with other children.

2. Expanding experiences and understanding of people, places, events and things:

This includes encouraging children to try new experiences, take a risk and contribute to group experiences. It also encompasses celebrating events like birthdays, Christmas, Anzac Day and Waitangi Day, inviting visitors to our centre such as the dental nurse and the new entrant teachers, out of centre trips like visits to the fire station and our annual end of year bus trip to places of interest in Dunedin.

3. Increasing competence with techniques for communication and with tools for symbolising and representing:

This includes enhancing children's literacy and numeracy skills, developing their verbal and non-verbal communication skills, fostering their creativity and encouraging them to engage with technology.

4. Increasing independence:

This includes encouraging them with self-help skills such as dressing themselves and managing their own lunchboxes, allowing the opportunity to challenge themselves physically and cognitively, and also encouraging the children to ask for help when they need it.

5. Transitioning to school:

This includes visits for the four year olds to the four year old programme at local primary        schools, and promoting familiarity with routines that will occur at school such as the bell ringing, lining up for hand washing and sitting on the mat for group time. Our structured lunchtime learning session for three and four year olds also assists with their transition to school.
